Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)

A Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC), also known as a Level 2 Check, is required for applicants seeking employment or volunteering with organizations that necessitate a criminal background check, including outstanding charges and entries.

Completing the CRJMC

Security guard license candidates must must provide a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) with their application. In Ontario, you must request a CRJMC from an:

  1. Ontario municipal police service
  2. Ontario First Nations police service
  3. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
  4. a private business that is authorized to provide police record checks like,

Please note that,

  • CRJMCs must be valid within six months of applying for the license.
  • Applicants are responsible for paying a fee to obtain their CRJMC. The fee and processing time vary depending on the police service involved.
  • For online security guard applications, the CRJMC must be a digitally issued PDF document from the police service (RECOMMENDED).
  • Applications submitted by mail require an original physical copy of the CRJMC.
NOTES:

1. When applying for a CRJMC for a Security Guard License, please use the following:

Reason for Request: Select “Other” and then enter “Security Guard License”
(Remember that you are not applying for Employment or Volunteering, so do not select these reasons)
Name of the Organization: Enter “Service Ontario”

2, Use the same Last Name and First Name as it appears on your official Canadian government documents, like Canadian Driver’s License, Ontario Photo Card, Citizenship Certificate, Permanent Residence Card, Work Permit, Study Permit, etc. Remember that your Family Name / Surname is your Last Name and the Given Name is your First Name.

3. Provide a minimum of five years (60 months) of residence history. Include all addresses in Canada and outside Canada, along with the duration of stay at each location. If you encounter errors with addresses outside Canada, only provide Canadian addresses.

4. In most cases, you have two options for Identity Verification

    • Use the Identity Verification Service to provide your identity details for review by the Record Search Unit (not recommended if have no established personal credit history – i.e. no credit cards, bank loans, mortgage, etc.)
    • Provide the requested documents, typically
      • photocopies of both sides of two valid government-issued IDs (one must be with the photograph like a Passport, Driver’s License, or Ontario Photo Card; the other can be a Citizenship card or a certificate, permanent residence card, work permit or a study permit)
      • a photograph, and
      • a proof of address dated within the last 30 days (For example, utility bills, government issued mail, or bank/credit card statements.

If you live in a community policed by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), your CRJMC must be completed by the OPP. If you reside in a large urban area, your Municipal Police Service will handle your CRJMC.
